Carport Size Guide for RVs and Trucks

Stephan Michaels
Carports

For years, carports have effectively protected vehicles, equipment, and valuables from the elements. They’re strong, affordable, and built to last for years. But with so many different options, footprints, and sizes, it can be difficult for new buyers to find the right metal carport for their needs.

So, if you’re looking for a steel carport but aren’t quite sure about the size or configuration you need, we can help! In this blog, we’ll take a deep dive into various metal buildings and how to choose the best one for your family.

Common Carport Size Categories

When you purchase a new carport, you’ll be able to choose from a wide array of models and configurations. These can include:

1. Standard Single Vehicle Carports

Also known as a single-car carport, these metal structures provide plenty of room for you to store one small or medium-sized vehicle comfortably. It’s an excellent option for small households or businesses.

2. Double-Wide Options

Two-car carports are a great option if you own more than one vehicle, offering the room needed to house multiple vehicles. They’re also fantastic if you own a single car and are just looking for extra storage space!

3. Boat Carports

For owners of boats, jet-skis, and all manner of watercraft, having the right cover can make an enormous difference in how long your vehicles last. Luckily, a boat carport provides all the protection you need from harmful UV rays, rain, snow, and even pests.

4. Commercial Vehicle Storage

Storing larger-sized vehicles and equipment such as cranes, trucks, and excavators is an integral part of keeping them in working order. Luckily, metal carports can be custom-designed to take on these larger projects.

RV Carport Sizes

If you’re the owner of a recreational vehicle, bus, or motorhome, you’ll need the right infrastructure to keep it safe. RV carports are a great way to accomplish this, with added heights, oversized garage doors, and custom widths that provide you with plenty of room for your needs.

1. RV Height and Width

To accommodate larger RVs, RV carports need, at a minimum, 9′ to 12′ tall doors, with several additional feet added to your building’s height to provide enough room for taller roof heights. Additionally, RVs tend to push the boundaries in terms of width, so you can expect to need a carport at least 16′ to 20′ wide to house one comfortably.

2. Top Height and Side Height

In carports and metal buildings, it’s important to remember that the top height of a roof peak is not the same as its side height. Side heights measure a building’s walls to the bottom of the roof. Therefore, if you have a 9-foot tall recreational vehicle and expect to house it in a building with only a 10-foot top height, you’ll undoubtedly encounter some sizing problems.

Looking to the Future

Everyone evolves, and so do our needs. Luckily, metal carports are designed to grow with you! With modern engineering, these structures can be added onto or expanded to meet your changing needs. Are you adding a new driver to the family? Now’s the time to add some extra width to the family carport!

They can even be customized with paneling, windows, doors, and a ton of options that transform your metal carport into a fully functional metal garage or barn. This expandability makes steel structures some of the most versatile buildings on the market.

Customize a Carport to Meet Your Needs

One of the things that set steel carports and metal buildings apart from the competition is their customizability. Steel buildings can be changed, adapted, or expanded from top to bottom, giving you complete control over almost every aspect of your structure. Look at just a few ways these buildings can be customized to suit your needs!

1. Size

Having the right size building is paramount to having a functional carport. Luckily, you’ll be able to choose from a wide range of carport sizes to find one that suits you and your family’s size and budget.

2. Roofing

There are several roofing types to choose between, including:

• Regular Roofs

Regular roofs are your typical carport roof with horizontal panels. It’s a great economical option that works well in most mild climates.

• A-Frame Roofs

An a-frame roof looks more like the roof you’d find on a home, with overhanging awnings, sharp roof peaks, and horizontal panels.

• Vertical Roofs

Vertical roofs have similar features to the a-frame design but with vertically oriented panels that allow debris such as snow or leaf fall to slide harmlessly away from your rooftop.

3. Colors

The color of the building you choose will say a lot about you. And with a metal carport, you’ll have plenty of colors to choose from! From the paneling to the roof and trim, your only limits are your budget and imagination!

4. And Many More!

From the thickness of your framing and paneling to windows and doors, there are dozens of customization options at your fingertips!
